Nelson's column (16 Novmber 2010)
So we are 8 league games into the 2010/2011 season and currently find ourselves 2nd in London League 3 North East. I am slightly surprised that we are doing so well after the disappointing end to last season and our failure to take more than 3 points away from home all last season. We have been lucky this season with squad selection and have managed to make very little changes to the side week to week. It has also helped that Captain Marc Thomas has been available to train and take the role of forwards coach on after working away last season. But I believe the main reason for the great start is the lads have now been playing together for almost 3 seasons and they are all starting to fulfill there potential. Russell Chapman has returned from injury and is getting better by the week and his goal kicking is helping us along after my attempts at goal towards the end of last season were not all inspiring. Kris Nelson has made an impact in the 12 shirt with his understanding of the game and ample frame giving us the platform to work with. Josh and Tritty are working well with Bradders in the back 3 and are starting to really gel well. With the likes of Boardley, Tommy C and Dave Palmer knocking on the door it all bodes well. Tom Dare has also had a taste of 1st team rugby and has equipped himself well and earned himself a well deserved try at Campion on Saturday gone. McLuvin is still going strong at 13 and has managed a few trade mark tries from deep in his own half. The front row is looking settled and Vice Captain Jakey is scoring for fun with some big runs. G and Shrek have been battling for the other shirt and have both been improving as the weeks go on. Howie has some competition in the hooker slot from Kyle but is holding him at bay with some excellent performances of recent. The engine room hasn't been changed and the old man Wilkinson keeps on chugging with his trademark restart catches and ball carries. Coleman is sharper and his pre season with Walsham has done us no harm. Stevie Adams, Jan Shitter and Stevie Powles are all performing well on the flanks and this has helped our offload game no end. Tommo is still putting the performances in week in week out and I have seen with my own eyes he has made at least 5 passes this year. The attitude towards officials and opposition has been very positive from the lads and we are slowly cutting the penalty count down, (apart from Campion where we managed to concede 20 penalties and 6 free kicks, nothing to do with the ESSEX ref.). On to this week and Basildon make the journey to Gunton Park. Basildon were flying early on putting cricket scores on teams but over the last few weeks have lost 2 games. This means nothing as we found out last season when they travelled down and gave us a lesson in ball carrying and rucking. Wouldn’t it be nice to get to Christmas in the same position as we are now? So let’s keep the effort up and no ridiculous excuses about training now please boys I know its getting cold how do you think I feel I’m half the man I was and I do less running than you lot.

Nelson's Column (17 Aug 2010)
Another season is upon us, and alot has been happening. If you have not already noticed there is some building work taking place at the club, there is an extention to the front of the rugby clubhouse that will give Keith the opportunity to fit in more bodies for the VP lunches. also the 1st and 2nd team changing rooms are getting the once over treatment and all this will be finished for the first league game of the season. A big thankyou goes to Stevie Adams who in his own time has done most of the work on the changing rooms, also thanks to Matt Jary ,Russell Wilkinson and all that have mucked in.
On the playing front not a lot has changed but we will be welcoming back Russell Chapman who has been out injured for the majority of his playing career, fingers crossed with all the weights and rehab he’s done he will not shatter this time. We should be welcoming back young Zac Baxter after a long knee injury as well, this is really good news as he was just getting to grips with his move from the backs to the forwards before his unfortunate injury. Kris Nelson lasted a whole year of retirement and has decided to give it another go which will add experience to the young back line if he can force his way past Stevie Adams, who, towards the end of last season was very impressive especially in the contact area. Marc Thomas is returning as captain after deciding not to throw the boots away just yet and has also taken on the mantle of forwards coach. There are also a couple of the younger lads who have made the step up to senior training who will no doubt be pushing for 1st team honours this season. Unfortunately Simon Coleman and Ryan Oakes will not be with us this season they are trying there luck down the road at North Walsham and we wish them all the best.
We also have a new physio at the club, Phil Quantrill, who takes over from Paul. Unfortunately Paul couldn't commit to us this season due to work commitments but will still be about as much as he can. Phil is up the club Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:30. Phil is also a qualified personal trainer so if anyone needs help in that department don't be shy. I have never needed one myself but I know there are some lads that could do with some advice.
We have already had a squad building day for the 1st team. 22 players attended and I believe everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The day consisted of canoeing, Norfolk Broads, getting wet, starting fires and general team building exercises. A big thanks goes to Mark Wilkinson and his team for a great day and hopefully we all learnt a little about ourselves. If your interested in a fun day or weekend out check out www.thecanoeman.com
The serious business starts on the 28th August with an away fixture at Southwold, although this is a friendly we will be taking what we see as our 1st XV team squad. Our first league game is away at old rivals Wisbech on the 11th September, so not long away now and still plenty to do. Training attendance has been good but could be a lot better so start making some noise coz nobody is bigger than peer pressure.
Let’s enjoy the season.
