At the beginning of Lowestoft and Yarmouth Rugby Clubs 125th season 2004-05 it was decided that the season should be celebrated in a special way. Arrangements were made to print a Celebratory Programme to be used for 2 seasons and also to resurrect the Club flagpole. The flagpole had originally been erected when the grounds at Gunton Park were officially opened on 5th September 1964 but the pole had disappeared in the 1980’s along with the remnants of the original Club flag. Efforts were made to secure sponsorship of the Flagpole, find a sponsor of the new Club Flag, and find some sponsors to help pay for the erection of the Flagpole. The project was very successful and the committee did not have to part with any funds. Without the people that offer us sponsorship we would struggle often to meet our targets and goals, and could often have to shelve projects such as the flagpole and flag purely on the basis of costs. All sponsors were contacted to ask if they wished for any publicity and all refused recognizing that there was no main sponsor involved. Great thanks to you all. The flagpole that we now have has a 50 year life expectancy. The flag may need another sponsor in a few years time. The new Club flag was “broken” and raised on the 40th Anniversary of the opening of Gunton Park on 5th September 2004. The flag was raised jointly by Mrs. Pat Shearman, wife of the former Honorary Life Member “Major” Shearman who died in 2004, and “Boaty” Gardener the Captain of Lowestoft and Yarmouth 1st XV in 1964-65, the first season played at Gunton Park. It was great fun putting together the Anniversary programme which the Club used for the seasons 2004-05 and 2005-06. The Committee offers its’ thanks to all of the present and past Club Sponsors, especially to those that advertised in this programme. Without these people we would often struggle to meet our targets and goals. 125 years ago some now unknown individuals, or at least unknown to many of the present members, decided to meet and created Lowestoft Rugby Club later to be amalgamated with Gt. Yarmouth Rugby Club to form our present Club. In 1879 when the Rugby Club was formed there was a war with the Zulu’s going on, Britain and France decided to have dual control of Egypt, and the original Tay Bridge was destroyed. It would be interesting to know what the original members would think now, looking at our superb grounds, our plans for the refurbishment of our Clubhouse, and the excellent work of those Committee members who have served tirelessly over the years. Forty one years ago on the 5th September 1964 our present ground Gunton Park was opened. The middle 8 pages of this Club Programme could be removed and you would have had in your possession the Programme that was available on that day. Some of those players are still making appearances at the Vice President lunches. Our thanks to The Queen for her message of support and also to The Minister of Sport and Tourism.
